A game of odds and evens, with the military dictatorship on one side and civilians on the other, “si-fa-sem-pre-bim-bum-bam”¹: we are equals², but we don’t see it.
On 1 February 2021, in Myanmar, the military seized power in a coup d’état. Thus, a war breaks out between the armed forces and civilians, who are engaged in fighting against the establishment of a military dictatorship. As a sign of rebellion against the totalitarian regime, the population uses a precise gesture: index, middle and ring fingers of the hand raised.
¹ “Bim-bum-bam”, adapted here as “si fa sempre bim bum bam”, is a phrase used in Italian for the game of odds and evens (“pari e dispari”). It also mimics the sound of explosions, similar to “boom” or “bang” in English.
In English, a similar phrase often used in games is “One, two, three, shoot!”.
² In the original Italian text, “we are equals” is the translation of “siamo pari”, where “pari” carries a double meaning: “even numbers” (as in “odds and evens”) and “equals” or “on the same level”.
